Journeyman Painting Log 9

Taste my green ice cream!
Four whole days since the last painting update?  Looks like I'm slacking off.  Today I finished up Zerkova and eVlad.  One is a terror on the tabletop and the other has the face of a horse.  I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which.  Looking at the picture on the left as I'm writing, there's little I like about the Zerkova model.  The pose is confused with the running and the ice cream, the sword is too thin (and therefore bends easily), the running-induced crouch plus all the swirling cloaks means much of the body is obscured.  Maybe it was the particular cast I got, but the detail seemed shallower than usual.  Then there's the face, which we won't mention again.  In retrospect I should have made the trim on the cloak a little darker, like the other Greylords, so it doesn't blend in as much.  She's also a bit googly-eyed, though that does seem appropriate when considered with all the context.

Olgunholt League Week 1

The second seasonal league of the year, Olgunholt, got started this week.  It is at least partially to blame for the lack of posts around here recently.  I managed to get my three games for the week in, though they were spread across three days.  Combine with playoff hockey and things get interesting, so interesting that I don't have many pictures.  Let's not dwell on unpleasantness though, there's some texting to do.

Tournament Mode Redux

Path to improvement or plotting my own downfall?
If you've read this blog over the last week or two it will be no surprise that today was my first trip to a non-local tournament.  (By non-local I mean not at my FLGS, even though the trip today was only about 30 minutes.)  I made the trip up the Beltway and into Purgatory Maryland, ending up at Dream Wizards for a 35 point Steam Roller.  While trawling the events forum on the PP site I see Dream Wizards come up a lot, so it was good to finally make the trip out to get a fix on where it is.  Turns out it's really not that much further than Huzzah Hobbies, though much of that is traffic-dependent.  Plus Huzzah isn't in Maryland.

As usual I over-thought my lists in the days preceding the tournament and ended up making some changes about 10 minutes before the first round.  Three lists were under consideration: pButcher tier 4 for armor-spamming zone-holding goodness, pIrusk for high DEF spam and general attrition grind, and eVlad for crazy assassinations and general entertainment.  The pButcher list was very appealing, but in the end I convinced myself I needed to be prepared for Incorporeal/only hurt by magic targets, and having just Lola to deal with those situations wasn't going to cut it.  The two lists I ran were:

Blood on the Table

He was worse in Mk 1?  Is that even possible?
I had an epiphany at the FLGS last night.  His name is eVlad.  Sweet baby jebus does he kill stuff dead, including pDenny (who I've never killed before).  He's such a slaughtering machine he doesn't even need to use his own hands to do the killing, he can just cause some of his closest killing friends to hulk out and become mini-Vlads.  Feated Doomie?  Try MAT 10, P+S 16 Weapon Master with Berserk and a 14" threat range.  Feated Kayazy?  How about MAT 10, P+S 15 (with Gang), 12.5" threat range that walks through people to get to the killing (provided you have the UA with the mini-feat).  Manhunters?  Just as sick.  I'm sure the novelty of this will wear off (eventually), but my head is already full of wackiness to try out.  Can feated Mechanics take out, say, the Avatar?  Or a clammed-up Devastator?  I'd like to find out.  The only (slight) draw back is you can't get characters with the feat, so now hulked out Great Bears, but there are tricks for them too.

And then there's Vlad himself.  No explanation is needed there.

Turning to news that will make the world, or at least my local meta, a bit happier, I almost finished the Marauder yesterday.  One of the feet came loose from the base so I'll have to pin/glue it back down, which I'd like to do before finishing the base.  There's also the cortex door freehand to do, but other than that the jack is finished.  I put a coat of varnish on it yesterday so I could take it to the FLGS without having to worry about rubbing the paint off; hopefully this doesn't interfere with the bit of painting that still remains.  I'm sticking to the plan of doing pVlad next, but eVlad is shooting up the queue after his strong showing last night.  In related news, Drago is also rocketing up the "to buy" ladder.  Even Uhlans are moving up.  Maybe there's a tournament in the area soon so I can fully indulge my face-smashing urges in the proper environment...
